Angelman syndrome, impacting approximately 1 in every 15,000 individuals, is a genetic condition that significantly affects neurological development, resulting in a myriad of challenges such as severe developmental delays, motor disorders, intellectual disability, speech impairment, hyperactivity, sleep disturbances, and epilepsy. The term “Angelman” stems from the typically cheerful demeanor exhibited by those affected by the disorder. Recognizing the immense burden placed on families, the Angelman Respite Center offers invaluable support and relief. Our center provides comprehensive services and respite care to individuals with Angelman syndrome, all within the comfort of their natural families. Through our tailored programs, including full weekend and overnight stays lasting 30 or 48 hours, we aim to alleviate the strain on caregivers while offering enriching activities designed to benefit the entire family unit.

In the heart of every caregiver lies an unyielding commitment to providing unwavering love and support for those with Angelman syndrome. A word from the Angelman Foundation President,

Mr. Paolo Di Vito

I’d like to take a moment of your time to talk about my colleague, my collaborator, and above all, my friend – Mr. Ron Deschênes.

In every sense, Ron was a beacon of light in the lives of everyone he touched. His unwavering dedication to giving back to his community, his infectious laughter, and his ever-present willingness to help others made him a cherished figure in the hearts of all who knew him. Whether it was through his philanthropic endeavors or his simple acts of kindness, Ron touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on the world around him.

I can say with certainty that this tournament and the benefits it brings would not exist without the incredible will and the unbelievable amount of work that Ron put into starting and maintaining it.

Ron was a special person with a strong spirit and who approached life with a jovial demeanor and a happy-go-lucky attitude that inspired everyone who knew him. He had a way of turning even the darkest moments into opportunities for laughter and connection, and always seemed to have an abundance of positivity and resilience.

Perhaps Ron’s greatest legacy lies in the love he shared with everyone he encountered. He had a rare gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued, and his genuine warmth and kindness created a sense of belonging wherever he went. It’s no wonder he was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In 2024 Ron lost his battle with leukemia, and his friends, family, and the community lost a wonderful soul. It is my great privilege to honor his memory by naming the annual Angelman Foundation Golf tournament after my good friend.
